How Superman & Lois Fans Really Feel About Ally Allston's Villain Arc
The Arrowverse has given birth to a vast array of villains over the years. Some have had an overwhelmingly positive reception from fans, such as Tom Cavanagh as the Reverse-Flash on "The Flash" and Josh Segarra as Prometheus on "Arrow." Other antagonists, like Casper Crump's Vandal Savage on "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" have invited more of a mixed response. But where does one of the franchise's most recent big bads stand?
Season 2 of "Superman & Lois" introduced Ally Allston (Rya Kihlstedt), a fresh take on the classic DC Comics villain Parasite with a sinister plan to merge Earth-Prime with its Bizzaro World counterpart. Allston has continuously gotten stronger over the course of the season, even going so far as to merge bodies with her alternate universe self, and as it currently stands, she has Superman on his back foot. But while Allston has proven herself as a formidable threat to the Man of Steel, some fans have their own strong opinions on the character.
Many fans dislike Allston as a villain
On a thread in the r/SupermanAndLois subreddit asking whether viewers would be okay with Allston's arc continuing beyond Season 2, several fans vented their frustrations with her as an antagonist. "Ally is barely a character and more of a plot device," u/superfan1635 commented. "She's so boring and her motivations are so vague. If they continue with her to next season then I don't think I'll continue to watch."
Other commenters shared similar criticisms, with many noting that the villain feels undeveloped, especially in comparison to Adam Rayner's Tal-Rho from Season 1. "She's not a foil informing something about the leads' characteristics, she's not thematically relevant, she's not an antithesis to our leads' value systems, she's not a cautionary tale, she's just causing problems," u/redditsuckstho commented.
Fortunately for fans who are down on Allston, the resolution to her arc appears to be fast approaching with the Season 2 finale airing on Tuesday, June 28, 2022. The cast and crew have already confirmed that the episode will set up a new villain for Season 3 of "Superman & Lois," who Bitsie Tulloch, the actress who plays Lois Lane in the series, described as "very cool" in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
As for whether Allston can end her time as the big bad of "Superman & Lois" on a high note, the answer will soon be revealed. For now, however, the character's legacy in the eyes of many fans is shaping up to be rather underwhelming.
