What's The Song In The New Mutants Trailer?
There's not much music in the first trailer for The New Mutants, but what's there is iconic.
The trailer features the school choir from Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall, Part Two" from the legendary British band's 1979 rock opera The Wall. Set against the stark backdrop of Josh Boone's spin on The New Mutants, the song takes on haunting new life.
Set in the X-Men universe, the movie centers on five young mutants who are just coming to terms with their powers. There's Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy), who can teleport; Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams), who can transform into a wolf; Cannonball (Charlie Heaton), who can fly and generate blast fields; Sunspot (Henry Zaga), who can absorb and channel solar power; and Mirage (Blu Hunt), who can create illusions of her opponents' fears or wishes.
But in the movie, they're held captive inside a secret facility where they can be studied and protected from themselves. At least, that's the plan.
All of it makes the use of "Another Brick in the Wall" seem like a perfect fit. Written by Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters, this portion of the three-part song serves as a protest anthem against the rigid boarding schools of the U.K. in the post-war era. But it was the idea of producer Bob Ezrin to enlist the children's choir from a school near the band's studio for the chorus.
The song came to be Pink Floyd's only No. 1 hit in the U.S., U.K., and many other countries, and it brought the band a Grammy nomination for Best Performance by a Rock Group.
Of course, it's not the first time "Another Brick in the Wall" has been used for a film. A supergroup featuring the late Layne Staley of Alice in Chains, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, Martyn LeNoble of Porno for Pyros, and Stephen Perkins of Jane's Addiction, recorded a cover version for Robert Rodriguez's 1998 sci-fi horror The Faculty under the name Class of '99.
The New Mutants arrives in theaters April 13, 2018. Meanwhile, check out Pink Floyd's original version of "Another Brick in the Wall" below.
