Margot Robbie Is Tonya Harding In First I, Tonya Teaser
One thing is certain: Tonya Harding has never looked better.
We've got our first official look at Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie in I, Tonya, the comedic biopic of disgraced Olympics figure skater Tonya Harding. In case you don't remember the '90s, Harding was a world-class skater until she was accused of orchestrating an attack on rival Nancy Kerrigan before the 1994 Winter Olympics. Now she appears on shows like truTV Presents: World's Dumbest.
"America: it wants someone to love. But they want someone to hate," Robbie says over a reenactment of Harding doing a triple axel at the 1991 World Figure Skating Championships. "And the haters always say: 'Tonya, tell the truth!' There's no such thing as the truth. I mean, it's bulls***!"
Directed by Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl, The Finest Hours), the movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it took the second runner-up prize for the People's Choice Award. Robbie already earned a Gotham Award for her portrayal of Harding while Allison Janney's performance as her abusive mother, LaVonda Golden, is getting a lot of positive buzz. Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) co-stars as Harding's husband Jeff Gillooly.
I, Tonya will hit theaters with a limited release on Dec. 8, followed by a nationwide rollout.
