Pacific Rim Could Cross Over With Godzilla And King Kong
Is the world big enough for Godzilla, King Kong, and all those massive creatures and robots in Pacific Rim? We might find out.
Godzilla and King Kong are already set to battle in 2020's Godzilla vs. Kong, but Pacific Rim Uprising director Steven DeKnight recently told Collider there have been talks about bringing the Pacific Rim universe into the mix.
"There's been a lot of discussion about that possibility [of crossing over]," he said. "Look, I think it would be fantastic to have the Pacific Rim universe join Legendary's Monster Universe. It seems like a natural step. And part of the big, overall plan after the third movie we've talked about is that could happen. It's always a possibility. It's by far not a certainty; it's merely theoretical at this point. But as a fan myself, I would love to see that happen."
In Pacific Rim Uprising, John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as Jake Pentecost, the estranged son of Stacker Pentecost, Idris Elba's character in the first film. Since the monsters come from the sea, the wealthy have moved to Middle America, leaving the poor to populate the coasts. But those left to defend themselves begin to build their own Jaegers (the huge mechanical fighters), and Jake is forced to join a program to teach pilots what he knows.
However, as DeKnight said, a crossover with Godzilla and King Kong is no sure thing, and even if it happens, it won't be until after a third Pacific Rim movie.
Meanwhile, Pacific Rim Uprising hits theaters March 23, 2018.
