Only Murders In The Building Character You Are Based On Your Zodiac Sign
Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building" is perfect for murder mystery fans, as the ritzy Arconia is home to quite a few killings. And who's going to solve all these murders but residents Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez). Of course, when these three work together, they tend to clash as their personality types couldn't be farther from each other. But perhaps that's their secret strength — their unique worldviews are critical for solving crimes.
Of course, they aren't the only three characters in the series with outsized personalities. The Arconia is home to all sorts of rogues, weirdos, and eccentric misfits. And if you've ever wondered which Arconia resident matches up with your own unique quirks, don't worry — we can help. The zodiac is a great way to determine a person's strengths, weaknesses, and identifiable characteristics. As it turns out, the principal characters in Hulu's comedic mystery series line up nicely with the zodiac's 12 signs. So let's dig deep into this mystery and find out which "Only Murders in the Building" character you are based on your sign. Warning — there are spoilers below.
Aries: Cinda Canning
Aries is the first in the long list of astrological personas. This fire sign rules from March 21 to April 19 and is represented as a ram — a confident and often stubborn creature. Cinda Canning (Tina Fey), a prominent true crime podcaster, is best represented by this sign. She's a direct and blunt personality who knows what she wants and how to get it. Someone who's heralded as the queen of true-crime podcasts would have to be driven, as well as blunt, if there's a mystery to be unraveled, and that's Cinda to a tee.
Of course, Cinda's confidence might come off as cocky to some. After all, she has two assistants and brags about a $30 million buy out. It falls on the slightly negative side of an Aries, but perhaps someone who wins two Peabody Awards for their podcasts is allowed room for such traits. As for her job itself, it makes perfect sense that an Aries would want to investigate murders. As Astrology.com puts it, "Aries' sense of individuality makes them uniquely suited for professions where they need to work alone, take risks, and advocate for themselves. Their careers need to have some dynamic of danger, thrill, competition, or urgency to be fulfilling."
Taurus: Bunny
Taurus, the earth sign represented by the bull, dominates from April 20 to May 20. Anyone who has a Taurus in their life can expect a little confrontation now and again. For proof, take a look at Bunny (Jayne Houdyshell), the Arconia board member. People like Bunny take no crap and certainly don't care for excuses. But she can have a soft side at times. In "Who Is Tim Kono?" Bunny mentions to Oliver that he is eight months late on his bills and that she is in fact playing nice with him by using a friendly tone to bring the issue to his attention again. In true Taurus fashion, she has indeed been patient and willing to let Oliver's financial transgressions slide.
Despite having a patient side, Bunny's tenacious Taurus tendencies get the best of her. She may not be responsible for the murder of Tim Kono (Julian Cihi), but she's out for blood when she needs to be. In the first few episodes of "Only Murders in the Building," she comes after Oliver for late building fees, late rent payments, and eventually his eviction from the building. Like other Tauruses, Bunny has a sense of loyalty. However, in this case, it's not a loyalty to other people but to the Arconia, and she wont' let its fate fall into the wrong hands.
Gemini: Oliver Putnam
From May 21 to June 20, Geminis are afoot. This air sign, signified by twins, is the happy life of the party. "Only Murders in the Building" fans know exactly who that sounds like: Oliver Putnam. The lovable Broadway director is the fluffy opposition to Charles-Haden Savage. He radiates with an aura of carefree, and sometimes childlike, charisma. He feels (really feels) his emotions and is no stranger to talking them over with anyone who will listen.
Oliver has his head in the clouds and dreams big, but that can sometimes lead to unfounded leaps of faith and long falls from grace. The evidence is in his career's big flop, a mermaid musical called "Splash" where 12 stage actors fell to their near-death after diving headfirst onto a stage floor that was meant to open into a pool. On the flip side, his idea for a podcast centered around Tim Kono's death is pure Gemini creativity. Not only does he see the podcast as an opportunity to play out a fascinating murder mystery, it could be the key to his redemption. When it comes to personalities like Oliver's, there's a sense of happiness in chaotic stability, even if that idea is crazy to everyone else.
Cancer: Jan
As the mystery of Season 1 moves on, a seemingly unimportant character is continuously seen popping in and out of scenes. Jan (Amy Ryan), a bassoonist for the New York Symphony, captures the heart of lonely Charles-Haden Savage. If you're a Cancer, you might be like Jan. Falling from June 21 to July 22, Cancer is a water sign and represented by the crab. These people are good at reading emotions. They can often be described as empaths and someone who can take care of others.
However, those who have an empathic personality could possibly have a talent for manipulating the emotions of others. Jan comes off as mildly coy when she's first introduced, but she can still crack a joke, and that's what peaks Charles' interest. She is imaginative and has a hint of compassion that makes her instantly attractive. Jan's talent for this and her ability to lie about her life to Charles inevitably turns the relationship sour. And by sour, we mean she turns out to be totally psychotic and Tim's killer.
Leo: Tim Kono
Tim Kono — the murder victim of Season 1, a man mysterious in both life and death. Tim is described by Mabel as totally honest, almost to a fault. Before his death, he told the truth wherever he went, which gave him a larger-than-life vibe, making him a classic Leo. This fire sign rules from July 23 to August 22. Leos can often come across as self-centered if their intentions are misinterpreted. Like Tim's detachment from Mabel, Leos can become closed off when they're faced with extra tough situations. Of course, Tim is the central figure of the show's murder plot, and for the bolder Leo, that's a coveted position to hold — alive or dead.
During flashbacks of Tim and Mabel's earlier life throughout Season 1, it's clear that Tim is at least one of the group's center members. He is a decision-maker, and it's clear that he has no problem keeping his decisions final, even if they come with negative consequences. Sadly, Tim's off-character choice to keep quiet about a previous murder is ultimately what drove him against his naturally honest instincts ... and is probably what got him a ticket to an early death.
Virgo: Detective Williams
Even though it's Mabel, Charles, and Oliver who bring a killer to justice, it's Detective Williams (Da'Vine Joy Randolph) who runs the official side of the investigation. As a member of the New York Police Department, she exhibits classic characteristics of a Virgo. Virgo season falls from August 23 to September 22. Those who bear the earth sign are known for their work ethic, tenacity, and focused determination. That pretty much sums up Detective Williams, who's a workaholic, spends long days out combatting crime, and has serious career goals.
However, she often finds herself in moments of self-doubt and self-criticism like many other Virgos. But they are powerful when confident and will do their best to treat those who they see as their equal with unwavering trust. Detective Williams eventually sees the strides Mabel, Charles, and Oliver make in their quest to find Tim's killer. Instead of shutting down their effort and their podcast, she puts an unfounded amount of trust in the three amateur sleuths and believes in them to help her get the job done.
Libra: Oscar
Between September 23 and October 22, Libra season is in effect. Libras are the friends who will never betray their core values and will help those in need. Oscar (Aaron Dominguez), longtime friend of Mabel and Tim, is that person. Just as a Libra needs justice and compassion, so does Oscar after he's wrongfully thrown into prison. As the story goes, Oscar is wrongly convicted of murder after his girlfriend Zoe (Olivia Reis) falls to her death from the rooftop of the Arconia. When Oscar is released from prison, he runs to Mabel's side and immediately jumps back into the fray to help her find Tim's killer.
Oscar provides a sense of security and stability for Mabel. On the other hand, Libras are passionate — maybe a little too much for their own good. Like Oscar, they stick with their partners for the long haul, but Oscar's heated argument with Zoe right before her untimely demise is proof that they have can sometimes have a knack for the dramatics.
Scorpio: Theo Dimas
When it comes to Theo Dimas (James Caverly), we find ourselves rooting for a guy who looks like an underdog, but we suddenly realize he isn't as uncomplicated as he appears. If you're anything like Theo, you're a Scorpio. This water sign lasts from October 23 to November 21. These personalities are easily motivated, and you'd want them on your side in any endeavor. But they can also go in a dark direction — becoming nihilistic, paranoid, and isolated. It's pretty easy to see that Theo's relationship with his father, Teddy (Nathan Lane), is one created through necessity rather than a typical father-son relationship. Honestly, that's just the surface of Theo's emotional iceberg.
Theo, born deaf, goes through life paying close attention to the tiny details. It's a signature trait of a Scorpio, and it's one they will utilize to their advantage whenever necessary. This sign is also known for their temper and sometimes irrational thinking. All the same, they are intelligent and hardworking. Any combination of these trademark characteristics can lead Scorpios down some dangerous pathways, and Theo has definitely traveled some crooked, criminal roads.
Sagittarius: Teddy Dimas
Sagittarius, a fire sign ruling from November 22 to December 21, is an interesting sign. Like Teddy Dimas (Nathan Lane), a Sagittarius is a mix of personality types. They are personable and likable, have a tendency to be the leaders of their group even if it's an unsought position, and will look out for their own. It's clear that someone like Teddy fits in this role. His odd relationship with Oliver is evidence of that. Oliver is the head-in-the-clouds dreamer, and Teddy will be the one to help him achieve his dreams, even if it's a little bit insane.
Going a little deeper into what makes a Sagittarius tick, Teddy is a bit of a grump and a little hard around the edges. It's clear he's made his own way in life, which makes sense because a Sagittarius can be a very driven person. The positive traits, like looking out for their own, might be a little too strong. When Theo admits to his father that he's just killed Zoe, albeit accidentally, Teddy doesn't think twice before jumping to protect his son. He executes a cover-up that keeps Theo's secret safe — for a while at least.
Capricorn: Charles-Haden Savage
Former '90s actor Charles-Haden Savage is the logical one you would want on your team while solving crimes. It's his critical thinking that pairs well with Oliver's exuberance. Charles is a classic Capricorn. These earth signs dominate from December 22 to January 19. Charles is the friend that likes to think through their decisions before jumping in. Like other Capricorns, he accepts that he's not perfect even though it might not be the easiest confession for him to make. At the end of the day, Capricorns are good people to have in your corner.
Their flaws are not typically the worst traits someone can exhibit. After having done all that thinking and processing, they have a tendency to revert to their comfort zones and might even create barriers to keep that comfort zone close. In a relationship, people like Charles have a hard time opening up. On his first date with Jan, Charles bungles — hard. His refusal to open up puts Jan off. But when he finally learns to express his feelings, their relationship blossoms. Sure, other Capricorns probably aren't in the habit of accidentally dating serial killers, but there are always risks when you open your heart.
Aquarius: Howard Morris
If anyone has to be a loner of the show, it's Howard Morris (Michael Cyril Creighton). He'd much prefer the company of his cats to other people, and he mourns the loss of his pets as one would mourn the loss of their mother. Howard is a fairly typical Aquarius. Ruling from January 20 to February 18, Aquarius is an air sign. This archetype might be a little moody or temperamental, but they have a love for their friends that isn't easily broken. Through most of the first season, we find that Howard and his cat, Evelyn, know most everyone in the Arconia, and they were far more loved than a murder victim. Tenants didn't think twice when they heard Tim Kono died, but it was all tears and sorrow when they heard about Howard's poor feline friend.
This sign may fall on the more sensitive side. Howard is one to hold a mild grudge — nothing too crazy, but an Aquarius doesn't mind reminding you of past mistakes. Howard is single throughout the series, and it's probably because he's picky when it comes to a partner, which is classic Aquarius. He wants his perfect soulmate. Don't we all? He's an eccentric type and perhaps a little emotional at times, which may get a little tiresome in some relationships unless this sign finds that perfect someone.
Pisces: Mabel Mora
Mabel, Mabel, if you're able, please help us solve this murder so fatal.
The final leg of the "Only Murders in the Building" trio is Mabel Mora. She fits well into the Pisces personality, and if you were born between February 19 and March 20, you do too. Right from the start, we know Mabel has an artistic mind. She tries to be understanding and patient. Instead of judging Tim for what he's done in the past, she seeks to find out his reasoning for keeping the nature of Zoe's death a secret. Like a true Pisces, she has a feeling that there's more to be uncovered and works to find out what it is.
However, Mabel might become a bit pessimistic if things don't work out the way she hoped. She might feel a little downtrodden when others don't give her the same respect she affords them. For example, when she learns that a chat she had with Charles was a word-for-word replay of a monologue from his old show, she withdraws from the friendship and acts like she's accepted some people aren't who she thinks they are. But even though she might be a little cynical about the world and those who live in it, she can't help but fall back into friendships and relationships because Pisces are kind and loving, and they enjoy another kind soul.
