Tatiana Maslany, Sebastian Stan Cast In Crime Thriller Destroyer
The actors behind Sarah Manning and Bucky Barnes are stepping into fresh territory.
As reported by Deadline, Orphan Black actress Tatiana Maslany and Captain America and Avengers franchise darling Sebastian Stan have been cast in the forthcoming crime thriller pic Destroyer.
Directed by The Invitation and Jennifer's Body helmer Karyn Kusama, who works from an original screenplay written by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, Destroyer stars Nicole Kidman in the lead role as Erin Bell, a Los Angeles Police Department detective who, in her early days as a cop, was tasked with going undercover with a cult-like gang in the California desert. Things quickly turned tragic, and when the gang's leader crawls back out from the woodwork several years after the fact, Erin must track down the remaining members to finally confront the demons she has dealt with and reconcile with how they have destroyed her past.
It remains unknown at the time of writing which characters Maslany and Stan will portray, but if the synopsis is anything to go by, perhaps the two will bring to life a pair of gang members or a duo of law enforcement officers that work alongside Kidman's Erin.
Fred Berger will produce the film alongside scripters Hay and Manfredi. 30WEST is attached to fully finance the pic, with Rocket Science on point for international sales. Bliss Media will handle distribution rights for Destroyer overseas in China, and ICM Partners and CAA will take care of things in North America.
Maslany wrapped her five-season run on Orphan Black earlier this year. For her performance as Sarah Manning–plus the character's many clones like Elizabeth Childs, Alison Hendrix, Cosima Niehaus, Helena, Rachel Duncan, Katja Obinger, and several more–Maslany picked up an Emmy Award win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2016. She was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2014 for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama. Maslany has recently popped up in Stronger opposite Jake Gyllenhaal, as well as films like The Other Half, The Vow, Two Lovers and a Bear, and Woman in Gold.
For Stan's part, most know him as James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, the best friend of Chris Evans' Steve Rogers who becomes the brain-washed Winter Solider. Fans can next catch Stan on the silver screen as former figure skater Tonya Harding's disgraced husband Jeff Gilooly in the black comedy biopic I, Tonya, which hits theaters on December 8. Stan will also reprise his role in Avengers: Infinity War, due out next year.
