Where Is Naya Tuiasosopo From Netflix's Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn't Exist Now?
In 2013, football player Manti Te'o went from esteemed sports prodigy to the central figure in one of the year's biggest scandals. After Te'o gained huge positive attention in 2012 when he played a great game shortly after announcing that he'd lost both his grandmother and girlfriend, things soon went sour when an investigation by Deadspin revealed that the story wasn't entirely accurate. It turned out that Te'o had never actually met his girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, in person. In fact, Lennay didn't actually exist, and Te'o had been catfished.
Netflix's "Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn't Exist" is a deep dive into this strange story, and the toll it took on Te'o ... as well as Naya Tuiasosopo, the person behind the fictional Lennay. Te'o has remained in the limelight since the scandal, and his NFL football career has been easy to follow for anyone who has the inclination. But how has Tuiasosopo's life gone since the Lennay Kekua incident?
Naya Tuiasosopo has led a private life
After the scandal broke, Tuiasosopo appeared on "Dr. Phil" to elaborate on the reasons behind the catfishing (via YouTube), naming love and escapism as primary motivations for catfishing Te'o. After that, she went on to keep a low profile, per Women's Health. In an interview with the New York Post, producers of the Netflix documentary revealed that they found her on Instagram, and she agreed to participate because she wasn't happy with the way the story was told.
In the documentary, Tuiasosopo — a transgender woman — speaks of her difficulties of finding employment after she was identified as Te'o's catfisher, and also reflects on how letting go of Lennay Kekua encouraged her to embrace her to embrace her own identity. "After this whole life with Lennay had ended, I couldn't give Lennay any more of my time," she says. "And I remember telling myself, 'you wanna be a girl, so be a girl'," Tuiasosopo said.
Though Tuiasosopo appears to lead a fairly personal life, the documentary shows her working in a DIY store (via the Radio Times).
