Mary Magdalene Trailer Reveals Joaquin Phoenix As Jesus

Everyone knows the origin story of Jesus. We celebrate it every December. But a new film will offer a fresh perspective on one of the most controversial figures in his life.

Universal released a trailer for Mary Magdalene, starring Oscar winner Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) as the woman with a deep connection to Jesus, played by three-time Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix.

Directed by Garth Davis (Lion), the film is an "authentic and humanistic portrait" of Mary Magdalene, a follower of Jesus who, according to the New Testament, was present at his crucifixion and resurrection. Mara's version of Mary is a young woman who feels "constricted by the hierarchies of the day" and "defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth."

After being baptized by Jesus, Mary becomes very close to the spiritual leader, but some of his disciples including Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor) are reluctant to allow a woman into their ranks. As they journey toward Jerusalem, Mary learns of Jesus' destiny and the difficult path she's chosen.

Cinematographer Greig Fraser received an Oscar nomination for his work with Davis on Lion, another movie about a spiritual journey, and the trailer offers a glimpse at what will likely turn out to be another awards favorite.

Mary Magdalene will be released on Good Friday, March 30, 2018.
