The Resident Season 6 - What We Know So Far

Medical dramas have long stood the test of time and have proven to be one of the most enduring genres of entertainment. As reported by an article in Dermatology Practical & Conceptual, the 1961 television show "Dr. Kildare" is considered the first medical drama on television. Since then, fans have seen an entire gamut of shows like "General Hospital," "House," and "Grey's Anatomy." Medical series are often driven forward by intense emergencies and interpersonal drama between patients, doctors, family, and friends.

"The Resident" is yet another installment of the popular genre, and it originally premiered in early 2018. The show has proven to be a tremendous draw when it comes to viewership, with TV Series Finale showing that Season 5 of the medical drama averaged around 3.1 million viewers per episode. Considering these numbers, it makes sense as to why a Season 6 was all but assured. But what do know about the sixth season, which premiered on September 20, 2022?

Who is in the cast?

"The Resident," like many medical dramas, has a robust and varied cast. The show primarily follows Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry), and he is joined by many other doctors, nurses, and specialists who tackle serious conditions. Unfortunately for Hawkins, he suffers from a rather potent heartbreaking event that sees him lose longtime fixture of "The Resident" Nic Nevin (Emily VanCamp) after a tragic accident in Season 5. However, there are several "Resident" alumni that are still with the show, like Billie Sutton (Jessica Lucas), Trevor Daniels (Miles Fowler), and August Austin (Malcolm-Jamal Warner), to name a few.

Not only does "The Resident" have many returning actors, but some have even been promoted to full cast members, like Andrew McCarthy, who plays Ian Sullivan, and Kaley Ronayne as Cade Sullivan. As reported by TVLine, Ronayne was promoted to season regular after the departure of VanCamp and will serve as a love interest for Hawkins. Executive producer Andrew Chapman told TVLine, "Given that we had Billie already on the show, and then we got Cade — and she was fantastic and a great character — we just loved the idea that, at the end of this season, Conrad would be ready to move on, but we weren't going to make that choice yet. We felt like that wouldn't be appropriate to the whole idea of grief and moving on. Making the choice is for the premiere of next season, and in fact, we have an idea laid out of what exactly it will be, and how we'll lay it out to the audience. That will be an entirely new idea."

What is the plot?

Season 5 of "The Resident" ended with several questions surrounding the future of Conrad Hawkins, and it appears as if many questions will be answered when it comes to Season 6. As mentioned earlier, there is somewhat of a current love triangle going on between Conrad, Billie, and Cade, and Conrad's ultimate choice — and why — will be revealed. In an interview with Deadline, executive producer Andrew Chapman explained what fans could expect from Season 6 by saying, "We have a bunch of soapy storylines planned for Season 6. Conrad and his love life, Devon and Leela and their budding family, Kit and Bell's wedding, Cade and her narcissistic father, and Billie and her longing for Conrad."

He continued, "But we also want to dive into our classic unaccountable medical storylines: addiction in the ranks of doctors, corruption of medicine through money, doctors allowed to practice when they shouldn't, street violence, and its catastrophic effect on hospitals. Have no fear, 'The Resident' will continue to tackle the problems in American healthcare in every episode." With this in mind, it looks like Season 6 will feature both relationship drama as well as the standard fare of medical emergencies and treatments that medical drama enthusiasts have come to expect from the series.

Is there a trailer The Resident Season 6?

On August 25, 2022, the official Twitter account for "The Resident" posted a brief teaser for the premier episode of Season 6, proving that it is a rather intense episode. The teaser shows off several images of many "Resident" characters, and it appears that some complications will occur with a pregnancy. One can feel the tension in the trailer as doctors attempt to figure out what exactly is going on, and long-time fans of the series know that they will do whatever it is they can to save lives.

Besides the medical drama, it looks like there will also be plenty of internal struggles and exposed feelings. As previously mentioned, there is a growing love triangle in the series, as well as interactions between family members. There is also a scene of a character consuming pills, which looks to further explore the dangers of addiction. Ultimately, Season 6 of "The Resident" aims to bring some closure to previous plots while also opening a bunch more, but that's probably why fans keep tuning into the popular television series.
