Los Espookys Season 2 - What We Know So Far

When Season 1 of "Los Espookys" premiered on HBO in 2019, the Spanish-language, horror comedy was hailed as a "delightful freak show" (via Entertainment Weekly) thanks to its absurdist humor, spoofing of familiar horror tropes, and celebration of all things bizarre. Created by and starring "Saturday Night Live" alum Fred Armisen along with co-stars/co-showrunners Julio Torres and Ana Fabrega, each episode of the series took on a day-in-the-life structure to tell the trials and tribulations of a group of friends trying to launch their personalized horror movie business to interested patrons within Mexico City. Similar in tone to "What We Do in the Shadows," the show successfully explored the satirical humor in the horror genre.

With only six half-hour episodes in the first season and a prolonged production schedule for Season 2 due to delays stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, the almost-three-year wait for more episodes ended when "Los Espookys" premiered on September 16, 2022. Here's what we know about the second season of "Los Espookys."

What is the plot of Los Espookys Season 2?

In the final episode of Season 1, titled "El sueño falso (The Fake Dream)," the big reveal was Tati (Ana Fabrega) decided to marry her strange boyfriend Juan Carlos (José Pablo Minor). In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Fabrega commented on her character's ambivalent decision and said, "[Her marriage to Juan Carlos] is a deeply troubling relationship. It starts out very wholesome and sweet. And then things escalate." This is not great news for Tati, but like all characters in the show, the humor of their profession gets them through life's challenges.

In the same interview, it was revealed that Fred Armisen's Tico will start to go on more personalized horror gigs with everyone else. But other cliffhangers from the Season 1 finale, such as Ursula (Cassandra Ciangherotti) potentially becoming a newscaster and leaving the crew behind, may not get resolved thanks to the self-contained structure of each episode. In an interview with The Playlist, Fabrega spoke about cliffhanger resolution and revealed, "I don't think so. I mean, I think when we were writing, at the time some of those cliffhangers were things that seemed interesting to us. And then when we came back to work on season two, we were like, "Actually, this isn't really fun to us anymore. Let's just scrap it." So I don't really know."

As of now, it seems like the show will continue with its new horror clientele theme for each episode, and resist becoming serialized.

Who stars in Los Espookys Season 2?

Fans of "Los Espookys" can expect more outlandish comedy and hijinks from all of the main cast that appeared in Season 1. In addition to Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega, and Fred Armisen, Bernardo Velasco will also return to his role as Renaldo, Tico's painfully gullible, irresponsible, and horror aficionado nephew. Torres as Andres and Jose Pablo Minor as Juan Carlos will also return. Although she appeared in four of the first season's six episodes, it is unknown if Carol Kane will reprise her role as Bianca.

The major casting news for Season 2 is the guest stars that have been announced for appearances, per Entertainment Weekly. Mexican actress Yalitza Aparicio, who was nominated for an Academy Award for best actress for her exquisite performance in 2019's "Roma," will play a mysterious role that is being kept under wraps. Aparicio will be joined by German pop singer Kim Petras, who will play a government official, and renowned actress Isabella Rossellini who will be starring as herself. Frequent guest stars in oddball roles were one of the cornerstones of the first season dynamic and this roster of performers should continue that trend in Season 2.

The trailer for Los Espookys Season 2

About a month after the release of its teaser trailer, the full trailer for the second season of "Los Espookys" was released by HBO on August 24, 2022. The trailer clocks in at about 2 minutes and in a typically surreal fashion, offers fleeting glimpses of the strange places the show will take us in Season 2. We immediately see Renaldo and Andres in a store shopping for underwear before cutting to a strange haunting that Renaldo is experiencing from a beauty pageant queen — at least, that is what she appears to be. Ursula seems to be motivated to get involved in politics, which segues into a baffling storyline that features Kim Petras as a blinged-out Secretary of State.

Taking its cue from the linear storylines that appear in each episode, the trailer presents quick cuts of farcical scenarios the characters find themselves in. It is also revealed that Tico will possibly be joining the horror/reality/exorcism business after remaining outside of the main action in Season 1. We'll just have to see exactly where these stories go and how the guest stars will fit into them as Season 2 continues.
