In 2016, “Shark Tank” featured a health-focused startup business called SmartPlate; the brand's titular product is a plate that can weigh your meal and calculate the food's total calories by using a smartphone app. The SmartPlate was only a prototype during its appearance on the show, and ultimately failed to secure funding from the Sharks.
Despite not being a "Shark Tank" success, SmartPlate secured a successful crowdfunding campaign through sources such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo. However, like many crowdfunded, independently-produced products, the SmartPlate had a rough launch, missing the promised delivery date for backers.
Luckily, six years after appearing on “Shark Tank,” SmartPlate seems to have found its stride. The company now has a solid customer base, and reviews of the plate's accompanying app on the App Store are predominantly positive, averaging 4.6 out of 5 stars; it looks like the Sharks weren't the only path to success for this startup.
