James Stewart's
Last Words Will
Bring Tears To
Your Eyes
By MIKAEL TRENCH
Known for his charming demeanor and unique drawl, James Stewart is one of Hollywood's most iconic faces. The "It's a Wonderful Life" and "The Philadelphia Story" star had many poignant performances throughout his career, yet it’s his final words that were the most poignant.
Three years before Stewart’s death in 1997, his wife of 45 years, Gloria Hatrick McLean died of lung cancer. Her loss was noted to be a heavy blow to Stewart and on his deathbed, surrounded by family and friends, the last words Stewart spoke were, "I'm going to go be with Gloria now."
While that certainly is a tear-jerker, Stewart's manner of a peaceful transition from a difficult ending was moving. There's something so poetic about someone best known for embodying the everyman to have their last words be dedicated to something so personal and human.
