On Why The 1883
Spin-Off Is Going To
Be 'Huge'
By KATY KROLL
"The Bass Reeves Story" is a spinoff of "1883," which is itself a prequel to "Yellowstone," and we know that "Selma’s" David Oyelowo will play Reeves, the first black U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River. In an exclusive interview with Looper, LaMonica Garrett, who played former Buffalo Soldier Thomas in "1883," tells us why the "Bass Reeves" spin-off is going to be "huge."
"1883: The Bass Reeves Story" will follow the titular Wild West lawman who captured over 3,000 people and inspired the iconic Lone Ranger. "Bass Reeves [is] a big one," says Garrett. "Throughout history, he's one of the most well-known Black cowboys of that Western frontier. He is one of the biggest names in U.S. Marshals history to me — Black, white, whatever.”
"It's important for people to know who Bass Reeves was," Garrett adds. "There are a lot of Black cowboys throughout history that we have no idea about [...] There have been stories made about him with his name and likeness taken out, but he's a legend." The actor also says that Reeves is "a superhero back in the 1800s that we've never heard about."
