Transformation
Of Tom Selleck
From Childhood
To Blue Bloods
By RACHEL REDFERN
Tom Selleck grew up in Los Angeles, where he spent the majority of his life. Selleck’s ability to amass such an impressive net worth is partly due to his father’s influence, who was a real estate developer with incredible business acumen.
Raised In The Valley
Selleck was a talented basketball player in his college years and attended the University of Southern California during his junior year to play for their team. He later trained with the Detroit Tigers for his role in “Mr. Baseball” and admitted he’s loved the sport since he was a child.
Sports Passion
Selleck’s journey into acting was an unconventional one, starting with a few commercials and “Dating Game” appearances in the ‘60s. Selleck was surprised when his commercial agent told him to consider acting as a full-time profession, but he took the risk anyway.
Acting
Selleck’s basketball experience earned him the approval of 20th Century Fox’s former president Richard Zanuck, who brought Selleck aboard the company’s New Talent Program. Selleck also attended the Beverly Hills Playhouse and studied under Milton Katselas.
New Talent Program
Selleck served in the National Guard for six years and was dropped from Fox’s New Talent Program shortly after he returned. He guest-starred in various television series to start building his career back up, until he started filming “Magnum, PI.”
