What The Rotten Tomatoes Reviews Are Saying About Sonic The Hedgehog 2

By SAM SKOPP

After the huge success of the first "Sonic the Hedgehog" movie, expectations are high for the second installment, "Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” Reviews for the film began surfacing online with its release this week, and the Rotten Tomatoes rating is middling overall.

Most reviews fall somewhere on a spectrum between qualified praise and tempered dissatisfaction. Time Out reviewer Olly Richards gave the movie two stars out of five, indicating that the script is “so chaotically plotted that it quickly becomes exhausting.”

Peter Debruge of Variety accused Paramount of rushing the movie’s production, adding that "'Sonic 2' wears out its welcome well before it turns into another phone-it-in franchise entry." However, Carlos Aguilar of The Wrap felt more optimistic about the film, as he wrote, “it offers enough surprises to be more pleasant than unbearable.”

According to the reviews, one of the film’s high points is the film’s cast. Justine Lowe from The Hollywood Reporter praised Jim Carrey's performance as the villainous Dr. Robotnik and Ben Schwartz as the titular Sonic, although others found Carrey’s performance a bit too over-the-top.

As for the film’s script, Peter Debruge praised the "Sonic 2" screenwriting team's ability to adapt the plot of a video game into a film-ready story. Justin Lowe highlighted how the film's formulaic structure results in a rapid-fire series of big action sequences that “sometimes underline the reliance on too much over-the-top cartoonish action."
