Lucy Chen in ABC’s crime drama “The Rookie” began as an LAPD newbie and eventually went undercover in Season 3, and her transformation is expertly portrayed by Melissa O’Neil.
Before fighting crime, O’Neil was the first female winner of “Canadian Idol” and performed on Broadway in “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Les Misérables.”
Her musical talent was even worked into Season 2, Episode 16 of “The Rookie,” where Lucy makes an arrest at an “American Idol” audition site and is mistaken for a contestant.
O’Neil also gained attention on not one but two sci-fi shows: She played Two for three seasons in the Syfy series “Dark Matter” and Suki in Season 4 of the CW series “iZombie.”
O'Neil never imagined having a successful acting career when she competed on "Canadian Idol" and said, "I thought that, essentially, I'd just go back to school and be a teacher."
