Why Azula's Name
In Avatar: The
Last Airbender
Means More Than
You Think
By SHANE O'NEILL
Most of The characters in the beloved “Avatar: The Last Airbender” have multiple layers to their personalities which makes them so interesting to learn about. Among the more complex characters is Princess Azula (Grey DeLisle), the daughter of Fire Lord Ozai (Mark Hamill) and the sister of Prince Zuko (Dante Basco).
Much like her personality and her ruthless, determined shell hiding Azula’s fear and insecurities, her name has a deeper meaning behind it than some fans might realize. Her name was chosen as a way to honor her grandfather, the Fire Lord Azulon, and the pressure of his legacy pushed Azula to become a perfectionist.
Azula carries with her name the legacy of her family and the Fire Nation at large, but the angry, violent princess may have had the ability to change. Sadly, the character never got the chance — writer Aaron Ehasz revealed there were plans for her Season 4 redemption arc with Zuko becoming her mentor down a peaceful path, but the idea never came to be.
