By NINA STARNER

"Hell Camp" investigates the programs led by Steve Cartisano since 1988. The Netflix documentary is shocking audiences by revealing the unsettling reality troubled teens face.

At Cartisano's camp, a boy named Matthew faced this reality when he refused a hike, leading to his bound body and limbs being dragged across rocks, severely injuring him.

Amber, another captive camper, reports being sexually assaulted as a form of discipline. Another teenager, Kristen Chase, died at 16 from heat stroke during a hike in 1990.

Viewer reactions to "Hell Camp" have come as no surprise. On platforms such as X, users call the film the "most f****d up documentary" and "absolutely horrific."

The director, Liza Williams, shared with Variety that she was taken aback by what she found, stating, “I thought it was going to be a film about really badly behaved teenagers.”

Williams urged the film to be more than just horror, hoping it reminds parents to connect and communicate with their kids instead of resorting to camps like those run by Cartisano.
